PT Sawit Sumbermas Sarana Tbk. (SSMS) believes that people come first, and so does their health. Where the community is concerned, SSMS runs several programs that includes preventive and curative measures.
Open defecation leads to preventable diseases that kill a child every minute worldwide. According to the United Nations, a lack of proper sanitation can cause dramatic consequences on human health, dignity, and security. It also negatively impacts the environment as well as social and economic development.
Recognizing the urgency, SSMS worked with Kotawaringin Barat Regency’s Health Services to improve sanitation in Sulung and Kenambui villages. We ran workshops to help the community mould their own toilets using simple instruments. With that important part successfully made within the villages, the community can build sanitation facilities more easily. The skills in moulding toilets can also provide them with an alternative revenue source.
Every year after the program is started, the number of diarrhea cases in Sulung and Kenambui villages continue to decrease. Because of this contribution, Kotawaringin Barat Regent granted SSMS an award as a token of appreciation in 2014.
As part of the company’s values to care for the people, SSMS helps members of the community who can’t afford medicine by administering free health care. Local community can reach out to SSMS’s plantation polyclinics to receive medical treatment and get medicines, as well as to use our medical facilities for free. SSMS’s polyclinics treat both in and out-patients.
In time of need, SSMS also provides mass medication for common ailments. We also hold mass circumcision in more than six villages and blood drives to support a healthier community.
