Aimed at improving the quality of life of the communities touched by SSMS’s operations, we formulate our community development program based on extensive discussions with the relevant communities to identify their underlying needs and the corresponding solutions. We then encourage community members to actively participate in the program to ensure values are generated sustainably. Over the years, these programs have served as an indispensable platform for business and communities to come and grow together.
At SSMS, we are optimistic about the potential of palm oil to fuel national development and bring real benefits to the communities. This belief is realized through, among others, our infrastructure building program.
In this program, SSMS helps the community to build and maintain public facilities. We repair roads and bridges around our plantations to improve access to remote villages such as Belibi, Simpang Sepaku – Perigi, and Sulung – Kenambui. In Nanga Koring village, which is inside the first stakeholder ring, we repaired roads and bridges for more than six kilometers long.
SSMS also helped Runtu, Suayap, and Umpang villages to have proper access to electricity. We provided Runtu village with a generator, while Suayap and Umpang village received electrical transmission infrastructure.
Commodity prices go up and down throughout the year; particularly in Ramadan, however, prices tend to shoot up out of the reach of many in the rural communities.
In line with our value to care for the communities, SSMS regularly conducts an Affordable Goods Market program and a direct distribution of essential food needs (sembako). In 2016, this annual program helped residents in XXX villages around our operations.
SSMS understands the importance of religion to the local communities in Central Kalimantan. We, therefore, support them in building or renovating their place of worship as part of our corporate social responsibility program. As of 2016, the company has worked on XXX places of worship in XXX villages.
